Lucky was constantly getting hot spots and yeast infections in his ears. He is extremely sensitive to even the tiniest amount of it. If he is visiting a friend and they give him just one regular treat he breaks out in a scab like rash all over his torso. So I have to make sure I bring MommyCookies with him wherever he goes. Even to Doggie Day Care!!
If you are thinking, “But my dog hasn’t tried any new foods!!”
Why is he suddenly showing symptoms of being allergic to something?
You would be absolutely correct. Almost all food allergies don’t happen with foods that are eaten for the very first time. They happen with foods that your pet has ingested again and again. This makes it even harder to try and find out which food is the culprit.
The only way to find out if indeed your dog has a food allergy and what food is the cause of it is to go to your Veterinarian. The symptoms listed above could be those of other illnesses and only your pet’s doctor can rule those out before you consider a food allergy. Once your dog is diagnosed your veterinarian might have you do some food trials in order to find out what your dog is allergic to.
At first we just thought Lucky had sensitive skin and ears. We belong to a Golden Retriever Group and our friends in there suggested that he might have a food allergy. We spoke with the Vet and in our case found out that Lucky was allergic to wheat gluten. When doing the food trial taking away wheat products was first. We were lucky enough to have chosen the one thing that he is allergic to.
To find out the proper protocol please follow the advice of your Veterinarian. They will be the best partner you have while you and your best friend are going through all this.
We knew we had chosen the right food to eliminate because he stopped getting hot spots, the itching went away, and the yeast infections with those stinky ears didn’t bother him any longer. One of our other dogs, Teddy, stopped smelling and licking Lucky’s ears. We call Teddy our Doctor Dog because he always knows when one of the dogs or one of us is getting sick. Whenever Lucky would be getting a yeast infection in one of his ears Teddy would go right to it and start licking. Sure enough a yeast infection was starting to brew.
Since our product advisory board was already on a raw food diet the only change needed in Lucky’s diet was the type of treat that he ate.
We began to buy the commercially manufactured rice flour product which, as you know, was recalled during the massive recall of food contaminated with melamine. That is when MommyCookies were created for Lucky, Buddy, Teddy and Dixie. Their doggie family and friends with and without allergies love them too!! And now they are available for your dogs too. LUCKY DOGS!
